On the right side of the Harding’s grocery shop on the Hight Street in Lowestoft, Suffolk (the shop is now a hairdresser) the Spread Eagle pub now has a different name: The Wheatsheaf. Douglas Harding referred to this pub in his writings.

The Cosy Corner cinema was on the left side of the Harding’s grocery shop on the High Street in Lowestoft, Suffolk (the shop is now a hairdresser). You can see part of the shop in this photograph, on the right of the cinema. The Cosy Corner cinema opened in 1913. Douglas Harding referred to this cinema in his writings.

She is with her six grandchildren. Douglas is centre back (aged 19). On the far left is his sister Freda, on the far right is his brother Geoffrey. The other children, the three younger girls, are the daughters of Douglas’s Aunt Mabel. This photograph was taken at Easter on the lawn of Douglas’s grandmother’s house in Colchester, Essex.

Douglas Harding (aged 20) with his Uncle Edmond. Harold Edmond Ward was the husband of Douglas’s paternal aunt, Aunt Mabel––who was the sister of Douglas’s father, Edgar. Edmond was a tailor in Stowmarket.
