DH: This is a very important principle of wider application. It is no use forcing on people the solution of problems which they have not yet recognised as problems. This is the meaning of the doctrine that conviction of sin is a necessary prelude to redemption from sin. People will not truly and deeply appreciate the unity of the whole until the divisions and conflicts within it have driven them to find a solution. Progress is therefore, in one aspect, the conviction of sin, inadequacy, estrangement. It is the progressive discovery of incompleteness. It is impossible to grow without pain, estrangement, discontent. Content is death.

You may not be ready for much of Mabel. If you are happy in common-sense activities and in the C-S outlook, I can offer you nothing that will make you happier. Only if you have discovered for yourself in bitter personal experience the emptiness and loneliness of the C-S self, can you grow beyond that self. Christ came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
