Gregory; Grosseteste; Guyau; Gwatkin; Card-G-07-03 DEH The metaphor & analogy in literature give life. Why? Because of the oneness of things. Wit brings together suddenly & unexpectedly, separate things — into the One. It is a sort of mysticism. Card-G-07-05 DEH You can’t push analogy far enough. Our hardest job is to realise the organic compactness of the world. Of course there are apt and inapt analogies, but it is essential to realise the kinship of all things. Card-G-07-08 DEH Our metaphors point to belief in the unity of man & animals: men are foxes, donkeys, monkeys, pigs, rats etc etc. And on the other side, animals are ‘deformed’ men — fables, fairytales etc. Animals actually are as it were fragments of man developed in all directions.
